Since 1937, Edo College has produced leaders in law, medicine, government, business, and the arts. ECOBA is the living continuation of that legacy.
Edo College Old Boys Association (ECOBA) is the alumni body of Edo College, Benin City. One of Nigeria's most historic secondary schools, originally founded in 1937 as the Benin Middle School. ECOBA unites graduates across generations, professions, and geographies in a shared commitment to legacy, mentorship, and the continued advancement of the Edo College community.
The Association carries a unique heritage. Edo College was founded as a deliberate act of strategic statecraft by Oba Akunzuwa II and was named the Benin Native Authority School, an institution designed to reduce a generation of educated men capable of leading their community through a rapidly changing Nigeria. ECOBA exists as the living continuation of that vision.
Providing trained manpower to bridge the gap between colonial and local authority was a central strategic reason for the establishment of Edo College, Benin City; originally called the Benin Middle School, in 1937. The school was designed to foster academic excellence, as well as the social and economic advancement of the Benin Kingdom.
The founding of Edo College was not passive acquiescence to colonial education, it was an act of deliberate, sovereign leadership. Oba Akenzua II exercised what can be described as a "Scholar-King" model of stewardship, navigating tradition to collaborate with modernity.

ECOBA's motto is distinct from the motto of Edo College itself, and deliberately so. The two serve different purposes and speak to different audiences.
Speaks to the act of education — to the values instilled within the school's walls during a student's years of formation.
Speaks to what graduates carry with them beyond the walls of Edo College: a shared history, an enduring bond, and an active responsibility to give back by creating opportunities for current students, staff, the environment and reputation of the school.
ECOBA is governed by its National Executive Committee (NEC), with Branches represented across Nigeria and the diaspora. Our governance charter, which guides all decisions affecting the Association, is available for download below.
Elected body comprising President, Secretary, Treasurer, PRO, and Committee Chairs — accountable to the full membership.
Each branch — domestic and diaspora — sends elected representatives to the Annual General Meeting for collective decision-making.
All Association decisions are guided by the formally ratified ECOBA Governance Charter, reviewed and ratified at each AGM.
